An Overview Of The Nutrisystem Weight Loss Program: A Review Of Cost, Effectiveness, The Food, Etc

I find that there are a lot of misconceptions about Nutrisystem.  I’ve had people write to me and express that they thought that this was a diet for which you had to visit and get your food from a clinic. (It’s not.)  Some people assume that this is a shake or liquid diet.  (That’s not accurate either.)  Others assume that this is a junk food or comfort food weight loss program since you get to eat pizza and cake.  (You do get to eat these sorts of foods but much of the fat and calories have been removed.) 

And, I do have people who assume that Nutrisystem is the Celebrity Diet since the company always has a slew of stars who share their weight loss experiences on it. (It’s true that people like Jillian Barberie and Marie Osmond have been very public about their experiences, but the web site is full of regular people who have had dramatic results too.) So, in this article, I’ll review this diet to try to dispel a lot of the misconceptions that seem to go hand in hand with it.

You Do Get To Eat Comfort Foods, But You’ll Eat Small Regular Meals: First things first.  Let’s get to the food because I know that’s what most people want to know about.  It’s absolutely true that there is pizza, ravioli, macaroni and cheese, burgers, linguine, chocolate cake, chocolate bars, and all sorts of comfort foods that you wouldn’t think that you could have on a diet (especially one that is high in protein like this one is.)  The foods do taste relatively decent for the most part, but the catch is that the portions are somewhat small and there isn’t a lot of cheese on the pizza or frosting on the cake.  In other words, most of the things that we love so much about these junk foods has been lessened.  Still, this choices are much more plentiful and acceptable than what you get with many diets.

You Don’t Have To Answer To Any One But Yourself (Although Free Counseling Is Provided):  The misconception about weighing in at a clinic is sort of baffling to me, unless people just have Nutrisystem confused with Jenny Craig. Most people order their Nutrisystem foods online.  This way, there is no middle man, the cost stays low, and you can often take advantage of very generous coupons that can save a lot of money.

Now, one good thing about going to a clinic is the counseling, but you’ll often pay quite dearly for this.  Nutrisystem does offer counseling. It is not face to face.  It happens over the phone or online.  But it’s thorough, it’s helpful, and it’s completely free.  You aren’t bound to it if you don’t want to use the service, but I’d recommend taking advantage of it as it’s a great benefit that is included at no cost with your food order.

You Can Lose A Lot Of Weight On Nutrisystem As Long As You Can Get In Ketosis: If there’s any secret to this diet, it’s this.  It works because it’s depriving your body of carbs and therefore forcing your body to burn fat and calories.  In order for this to happen, you must get into ketosis.  If you consume too many carbs, you won’t be able to do this.  So long as you are eating what the company sends you and then use common sense on your side items, you should not really have too much of a problem and you can test this with ketone strips. I believe people get in trouble when they add in high sugar or high carb sides. As long as this isn’t your reality, you should enjoy the pretty quick results that ketosis brings.

Cost Or Cost Effectiveness Of Nutrisystem: I believe that this diet is reasonably priced.  Depending on how many days per week you want to be on the diet, you can either chose the flex or the regular program. The flex program has on taking two days off per week and that one is only $234 per month.  If you’re going to diet each day of the week, the regular program is about $300 per month, but this is before any coupons or savings, which you can almost always find.
