Celebrity News casting buoys upcoming blockbusters
Recent financial woes over at Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) had put a certain amount of uncertainty over two of the studios most highly anticipated and potentially profitable movies. However, this week has seen a number of celebrity news stories emerge that suggest they are now firmly back on track.
While rumours continue to circulate about some of its other cast members, it seems the 23rd James Bond movie is making significant progress. The tabloids have been putting names like Freida Pinto and Olivia Wilde forward as possible Bond Girls, while some of the more reputable film sites have suggested Britain’s very own Rachel Weisz might be a prime candidate for the secret agent’s latest nemesis. However, one woman who is reportedly definitely on board is Dame Judy Dench, who will reprise her role as M in the upcoming blockbuster.
Speaking to journalists at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, Dame Judy said she would be involved in the franchise for a seventh time, but was guarded about any of the plot details for the movie. “My lips are sealed. I can’t tell you anything at all!” she said. The actress went on to say that she was looking forward to teaming up with Daniel Craig once more and was also excited about the choice of director for the project. “Of course, I’m looking forward hugely to working with Daniel again and with Sam [Mendes] who I’ve only ever worked with in the theatre.” Currently, the new James Bond adventure is without an official title, but is slated for worldwide release on November 9th 2012.
Elsewhere, another blockbuster production that has gone through its own troubles of late has been given a ray of late thanks to some casting news. The Hobbit had originally been lined up for Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth helm Guillermo Del Toro, but during MGMs period of financial difficulty, Del Toro stepped aside to focus on some of the other projects he had lined up. This provided the opportunity for Australian director Peter Jackson to announce that he would once more be stepping into JRR Tolkien’s world having successfully guided three Lord of the Rings films to the silver screen.
However, more recently celebrity gossip columns went into overdrive regarding the film’s acting talent with Martin Freeman of TVs The Office apparently lined up to take the lead role and Saoirse Ronan – who worked with Jackson on The Lovely Bones – apparently also involved. While the movie has yet to lock down its main stars, expect a great deal more coverage on its production further down the line.
