Taff first gained recognition
as lead vocalist for The Imperials (1977-1981), but quickly
gained a reputation as one of Christian music's most powerful
and versatile artists, one whose music could hold its own against
the best mainstream acts. His dynamic vocals reflect both the
joys and the struggles of The Christian faith.
The musical roots of most CCM
artists lie pretty close to the surface, but that's not the
case with Taff, the son of a Pentecostal evangelist who preached
in California migrant territory.
Under Their Influence
pays tribute to Blind Willie Johnson, Brother Joe May, and Mahalia
Jackson, among others, with an album that provides the link
between gut-level gospel and Southern rock.
Taff serves up his best effort
on The Way Home, a blend of well-crafted acoustic pop
and roots-rock that deserved to be heard beyond the walls of
CCM.
